A US amphibious assault ship carrying around 1,800 Marines is now operating in the Indian Ocean, as speculation intensifies over a potential ground campaign against Iran, according to US Central Command.
The USS Tripoli, part of an amphibious ready group, was recently photographed sailing in the region, though officials have not disclosed how close it is to Iranian territory. Reports indicate the vessel is transporting troops from the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, alongside additional US forces including elements of the 11th MEU and the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division.
The deployment comes amid escalating rhetoric from US President Donald Trump, who has floated the possibility of targeting Iran’s Kharg Island, a critical energy hub. Tehran has responded with warnings of retaliation against any US ground incursion.
